The Captive Conundrum: A Critical Look at Zoos

Zoos, where animals are being held captive, are facilities that people have been visiting for many years to entertain themselves, sometimes as a weekend activity to show children animals that they cannot see in their natural habitat, and sometimes claimed to have been established for the protection of animals, which is a shame to humanity.

I would like to say now what I was going to say at the end.

Don’t go to the zoos!!

Don’t be a party to this crime!!

Don’t commit a crime!!

The species in zoos are kept in much smaller and inadequate spaces compared to their natural habitats. For example, elephants or big cats are kept in tiny cages while they need much larger spaces. This causes serious psychological and physical problems for these creatures, which have already been torn from their natural habitat or born behind iron bars.

Imagine an Elephant that has come to earth to roam the wide savannahs. Elephants are known for their memory and the social bonds they form within a group. What about an elephant in captivity, confined to a concrete area? Or a tiger whose hunting instinct is blocked by iron bars?

The average life expectancy of animals in zoos, including dolphin parks, is much shorter than animals living in their natural habitat. The reason for this is malnutrition, the stress of being in captivity and being disconnected from their natural environment….Did you know that Filipper the dolphin shown on TV as a child was actually 6 different dolphins because Filipper committed suicide due to stress?

Dolphins and Whales are species that can form complex social relationships and travel long distances by communicating. When they are confined to tiny tanks, these abilities begin to atrophy and they become unable to meet their socialization needs. If you watch the documentary BlackFish, you can better understand the drama of Orcas in captivity.

Do you remember Harambe the Gorilla? He was shot and killed by the zookeepers because of a child who entered the area where was Harambe .The gorilla didn’t kill the child, he was just scared because of the screams from the surroundings, and both the child and Harambe the Gorilla should not have been there.

You may be taking your children to these prisons in order to educate them, but when your children see the animals behind bars, all they think is nonsense like human beings are superior to those creatures. From that point on, the name of captivity turns into a Zoo. All this crime becomes normalized in the minds of children. This is not true love. Your children are not learning to love animals, they are learning to enslave them.

In the era we live in, there are many opportunities such as documentaries, virtual reality experiences and exhibitions to teach your children to love animals.

Dear Professors; You do not need to make a school trip to Antarctica to explain Global Warming, nor do you need to go to zoos for biology education.

Instead of supporting zoos, you can contribute to protecting the natural habitats of living creatures and tell others about the importance of this.

I can hear some of you saying that with so many wars and human tragedies, why is it the turn of animals? The senseless war of man against his own species is a shame in itself. But the man who does this is the man who considers himself superior to animals because of his brain. The human who can make conscious and planned decisions. The human who has the power to start and end the war but does not want it to end. The animals are innocent!! They are just trying to survive, unaware of what is happening.

Don’t forget that you have a beating heart, those animals have a beating heart too.

It hurts when your hand is cut off, it hurts those animals too.

The only difference is that they are too innocent to understand why they are being tortured.
